1. It is formally called the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
2. It was established in 1979.
3. This was after the 1979 revolution.
4. The revolution marked a significant turning point in Iran's political landscape.
5. The Pahlavi monarchy led by Shah Mohammad Reza Pahlavi was toppled.
6. Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini took over serving as the first Supreme Leader. He died in 1989.
7. Ayatollah Ali Khameini succeeded him until he was brutally murdered on Friday/Saturday.
8. The IRGC became and still very powerful and feared in Iran.

10. The IRGC military duties includes operating protecting the Supreme Leader and overseeing the entire government security apparatus and political government.
11. The IRGC is also highly influential in Iran’s national politics.

13. The IRGC played a pivotal role in the 24 hours in naming Khamenei’s 56 year old son Mojtaba Hosseini Khamenei as new Supreme Leader.
14. Mojtaba Khamenei is the second son of the late Supreme Leader.
15. He operates as a formidable power broker with deep, behind the scenes influence in Iran. He is said to be the unofficial COO of the IRGC.
16. He was also regarded as the “Prime Minister” of Iran like Ghana’s Gabby. He had “special powers” and served as an informal link between President Pezeshkian’s government and the Supreme Leadership Authority.
17. The Supreme Leadership Authority is the highest governing body of the Spiritual group. This group appears to be more powerful than the elected government of Iran.
