PRESS STATEMENT - DSTV IMPASSE : MINORITY COMMITTEE MEMBERS’ REBUTTAL

We have taken note of Hon. Samuel Nartey George's recent interview on JoyNews, where
he made certain pronouncements regarding the DSTV impasse in response to our press
release. We would like to put on record that the minority members on the Committee of
Communication and Information are not surprised by his stance, given his reputation for
arrogance, disrespect, and pomposity among well-meaning Ghanaians. As minority
members, we have been diligent in our committee work. The minority, indeed, wrote to the
chairman of the committee requesting for a meeting to address the DSTV impasse. It is
worth noting that the chairman, a majority member, is responsible for summoning
meetings, not members with concerns.
It is recalled that Hon. Samuel Nartey George once stated in a media encounter: "I will
meet the Ghana and South African team in my office, and I am clear in my mind that the
meeting will not come to an end without an agreed reduction in price. I have seen the
attempt by the South African management to say that when you buy a package, they should
upgrade you to the next one. We are grateful, but that is not what we want." It appears that
his stance has shifted. The question remains: who between him and the minority members
is incompetent?.
Our Demands:
1. The minister should inform every Ghanaian of his reason for changing his initial stance
on not accepting any upgrade but price reduction of not less than 30%.
2. The minister should account for the amount collected by the government from the
GH¢10,000 imposed on DSTV since its inception.
Regarding his insult on the minority, we will not request an apology from him because it
is a trait that is too expensive for him to afford.
We reiterate that the minority members on the committee are dedicated professionals who
take their responsibilities seriously and are always available for scheduled meetings.
SIGNED
HON. MATTHEW NYINDAM
RANKING MEMBER, COMMITTEE ON INFORMATION AND
COMMUNICATION.
