Bawumia’s Apology and the Honest Path Forward By Kwame Baako Deka

Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s apology to Ghanaians is both timely and commendable. In politics, humility is too often dismissed as weakness. In reality, it is the strongest mark of leadership. By apologising, he has shown he is not detached from the frustrations of ordinary people.
I have spoken to him privately, and I can say his remorse is genuine. This is not theatre. He admits mistakes were made and insists the future must not repeat the errors of the past. In his own words: “We could have done better, and I am determined that the future must not repeat the mistakes of yesterday.”
What strikes me is his refusal to play the blame game. He accepts responsibility and wants to chart a new path. That path is one of inclusivity. For too long, politics in Ghana has served the few while the many merely survive. Bawumia wants to break that cycle.
His vision is a government built on merit, capacity and results. Not old-boy networks. Not empty patronage. Real delivery. Real accountability.
He believes every Ghanaian, especially the underprivileged, must be mobilised into genuine economic freedom. Not token handouts. Not opulence for the elite. But empowerment that restores dignity to labour, fairness to reward and meaning to opportunity.
The apology must therefore be more than words. It should be the foundation of a new covenant with Ghanaians, especially the youth who are desperate for hope.
In Dr. Bawumia, I have seen regret, but also resolve. The question is whether we, as citizens and as a party, are ready to rise with him, match his humility with unity, and build the Ghana we deserve.
