Public Statement on MPs’ Educational Support

It is important to correct the widespread misconception that Members of Parliament personally fund the school fees and scholarships they extend to their constituents. In reality, these payments are not from the private income of MPs, whether from the NDC or NPP, but from the District Assembly Common Fund (DACF). This fund is a public resource, specifically allocated to support education and other community needs.
When MPs provide educational support, they are therefore disbursing money from the Common Fund, not from their individual pockets. Citizens must recognise this distinction, so that public officers are duly acknowledged for using state resources responsibly, and not unduly credited for personal generosity.
Equally important, however, is the need for transparency and accountability in the use of these funds. Reports and experiences show that in some cases, not all of the money allocated is applied fully to the payment of school fees and scholarships as intended. This raises legitimate concerns about whether the fund is being utilised in line with its purpose.
As citizens, we have a duty to demand accountability to ensure that every cedi of the Common Fund serves its rightful purpose—supporting students, easing the burden of education, and strengthening our communities.
