Stop Pushing ‘Dangerous’ 3rd Term Agenda For Mahama – Nyaho-Tamakloe Warns Clergy

Founding member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr. Nyaho Nyaho-Tamakloe, has rebuked segments of Ghana’s religious community, warning against attempts to influence the political future of President John Dramani Mahama through so-called prophetic revelations.

He condemned recent suggestions from charismatic leaders calling for a constitutionally defiant third presidential term for Mahama, labeling the idea as “misleading, unconstitutional, and dangerously divisive.”

“Our nation is not governed by pulpit proclamations but by the will of the people, enshrined in our Constitution,” Dr Nyaho-Tamakloe emphasised in a statement on Thursday July 24. Ghana’s 1992 Constitution limits presidential tenure to two terms, a provision that can only be altered through a national referendum—not spiritual visions.

Citing historical parallels, Dr. Nyaho-Tamakloe recalled the controversial UNIGOV initiative under General I.K. Acheampong in the late 1970s, which saw clerical interference in governance and eventually triggered coups and unrest.

He warned that repeating such mistakes would risk undermining Ghana’s democratic foundations.

He also urged clergy members to resist the temptation to politicise religion, cautioning that prophetic activism blurs the line between faith and governance, confuses the public, and threatens national unity.

“Ghanaians are yearning for leaders who champion agriculture, job creation, and good governance—not theatrical spirituality that distorts truth and sows confusion,” he stated.
