The NPP Flagbearer Contest Was Clear: Dr. Bawumia Defeated Kennedy Agyapong Decisively

It is quite curious, and frankly disappointing to hear Hon. Kennedy Agyapong repeatedly suggest that H. E. Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia does not deserve a second opportunity to lead the NPP into the next general elections. While public debate is healthy in any democracy, it is important to ground such arguments in facts, not personal emotions or selective memory.
Here is the simple truth: in the NPP’s most recent presidential primaries, the party decisively chose Dr. Bawumia as its flagbearer, and it was no close contest. Dr. Bawumia obtained over 61% of valid votes cast, while Hon. Kennedy Agyapong secured just 37%. The grassroots of the NPP spoke clearly and emphatically: they believe in the leadership, vision, and competence of Dr. Bawumia.
If Kennedy Agyapong believes that poor performance should not be rewarded, then by his own logic, he should not even consider contesting again, because the NPP itself rejected him barely a year ago. The party, through its most democratic and transparent process, told him that he is not the right choice to lead NPP into 2024 or beyond.
How then can he now presume to lecture the party on who deserves to contest national elections, when the NPP membership, the same delegates he is appealing to have already said loudly that he is not fit to lead the party?
Moreover, the argument that Dr. Bawumia “did not do well” in the 2024 national elections ignores the undeniable structural and contextual realities of that contest, a contest that many political historians will analyze in the years to come. But in the internal party context, where delegates had a full view of the candidates' capabilities, track records, and potential to lead, Dr. Bawumia left no doubt about his superiority over Kennedy Agyapong. He beat him at the ballot; period.
If Mr. Ken Agyapong insists on contesting the next NPP primaries, he should prepare himself for another defeat, because Dr. Bawumia has already shown him his level, and that level is far above Kennedy Agyapong’s. The NPP has spoken once, and if called upon again, it will speak even louder in reaffirming its confidence in Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
It is time for Kennedy Agyapong to accept this reality and stop attempting to rewrite history to suit his personal ambitions.
