Dr. Bawumia Deserves Another Opportunity

A single election cycle is insufficient to assess the potential of a presidential candidate in Ghana. Historical trends strongly support this argument:

1. In 1996, former President Kufuor made his first attempt at the presidency, securing 39.60% of the votes while winning in his home region, the Ashanti Region.

2. By 2000, he contested again and was successfully elected as President.

3. The late former President Atta Mills lost in the 2000 elections, securing only 43.51% of the votes and failing to win his home region, the Central Region.

4. His performance declined in 2004, where he once again lost in the Central Region with a reduced vote share of 38.94%.

5. Despite these setbacks, the NDC continued to support Atta Mills, fielding him again in 2008, when he finally won the presidency on his third attempt.

6. Former President Nana Akufo-Addo also lost his first bid in 2008, but the NPP remained committed to him, presenting him in 2012 and 2016, which ultimately led to his victory in 2016.

7. Former President Mahama won on his first attempt but was defeated in 2016. Rather than replacing him, the NDC backed him again in 2020 and 2024, leading to his ultimate victory in 2024.

8. Dr. Bawumia contested the presidency for the first time in 2024 and, despite the loss, secured victory in his home region, which is not traditionally an NPP stronghold. Given this, why should he be replaced after just one attempt?

9. President Atta Mills lost his home region twice but was still supported by the NDC. Similarly, former President Mahama was defeated as an incumbent, yet the NDC continued to stand by him. The NPP also demonstrated the same commitment to Kufuor and Nana Akufo-Addo, supporting them through multiple election attempts.

10. Dr. Bawumia should receive the same opportunity. I strongly advocate for his return and urge all party members to unite behind him.
