This is Raphael Nii Amaa Ollennu (1906–1986)  a distinguished Ghanaian jurist, statesman, Speaker of Parliament, and one of the most respected legal minds in Ghana’s history.

Though many may not know, he briefly served as Acting President of Ghana in 1970 during an important transition period in the country’s political history.

Born in Labadi (La), Accra, Raphael Nii Amaa Ollennu rose through education and hard work, studying at Salem School in Osu and Accra High School before pursuing a legal career. He later became one of Ghana’s foremost legal scholars, making major contributions to customary law and land law, areas that still influence Ghana’s legal system today.

Beyond the courtroom, Ollennu also played an active role in politics. In 1950, he founded the National Democratic Party, later joining forces with opposition figures such as J.B. Danquah and K.A. Busia in challenging the dominance of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s CPP government.

Following Ghana’s return to constitutional rule, he served as Speaker of Parliament from 1969 to 1972 during the Second Republic. Between 7th August and 31st August 1970, he also served as Chairman of the Presidential Commission, effectively becoming Ghana’s Acting President, overseeing the transition from military rule to civilian leadership under President Edward Akufo-Addo.

Raphael Nii Amaa Ollennu’s legacy extends beyond politics. He is remembered as a man of intellect, law, and service whose contributions helped shape Ghana’s legal and democratic foundations.

History often remembers presidents, but sometimes, the quiet statesmen behind transitions leave just as powerful a legacy.
