PROFILE OF PROFESSOR MOHAMMED MUNIRU IDDRISU
Professor Mohammed Muniru Iddrisu is the Second Principal of the Nyankpala Campus of the University for Development Studies (UDS).
He began his basic education at St. Joseph Primary School in Tamale and later attended Nuriya Arabic and English School, Tamale, where he studied both secular and Islamic education. After passing the Common Entrance Examination in 1986, he enrolled at Northern School of Business (Nobisco), Tamale. Due to his strong ambition to pursue science, he transferred to Ghana Secondary School (now Ghana Senior High School), Tamale, in 1987, where he obtained his General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) in 1991. He proceeded to Fijai Secondary School (now Fijai Senior High School), Sekondi, and earned his Advanced Level Certificate in 1993. He then performed his first National Service as a classroom teacher at Ziong E/A School during the 1993/1994 academic year.
Before his appointment as Principal of the Nyankpala Campus, Professor Iddrisu served as Dean of the School of Graduate Studies and Research and Chair of Convocation Leadership at the University of Technology and Applied Sciences (UTAS), Navrongo. At UDS, he held several key leadership positions, including:
• Vice-Dean, Faculty of Mathematical Sciences (2017–2020)
• Head, Department of Mathematics (2016–2017)
• Faculty Coordinator, Third Trimester Field Practical Programme (TTFPP) (2014–2016)
• Department Quality Assurance Officer (2014–2016)
• Campus and Faculty Examinations Officer (2008–2011)
• Kintampo North District Coordinator, University TTFPP (2006–2008)
• Acting Head, Department of Applied Mathematics and Computer Science (2007–2008)
He currently chairs the UDS Library Board and the Nyankpala Campus Board. He has also served on numerous high-level committees at both UDS and UTAS, including the Academic Board, Management Committee, Finance Committee, Development Committee, Budget Committee, and the Statutes Drafting Committee of UTAS. He was a member of the committees that drafted the UDS Ethics Policy, the Standard Operating Procedures for Research Involving Humans and other Living Organisms, and the UDS Strategic Plan for Workforce Development.
Professor Iddrisu has represented the Vice-Chancellor of UDS at several national and institutional events, delivering speeches on his behalf. Notable appearances include the 2024 National Political Parties Dialogue on Education Policy in Ghana (UDS Multipurpose Auditorium, Tamale, 26 October 2024), UDS Matriculation ceremonies at Nyankpala Campus (since November 2023), and Congregation and Matriculation ceremonies of UDS-affiliated University Colleges.
Academic and Professional Qualifications�Professor Iddrisu holds the following degrees:
• BSc Mathematics (Major) and Physics (Minor), University of Cape Coast (1994–1998)
• MSc Mathematics, Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Trondheim, Norway (2002–2004) – under the Quota Programme Scholarship
• PhD Mathematics, University for Development Studies, Tamale (2011–2015)
During his PhD, he spent twelve months at the Laboratoire Angevin de Recherche en Mathématiques (LAREMA), University of Angers, France, under a French Government grant. In August 2024, he attended a leadership course on the relevance of Lean Theory in higher education management for Vice-Chancellors of public universities in Ghana, held at the University of St Andrews, Fife, Scotland, United Kingdom.
He joined UDS as a Lecturer in 2005 and rose through the ranks: Senior Lecturer (2015), Associate Professor (2019), and Professor of Mathematics (2023). An accomplished scholar, he has over 70 publications in refereed journals and serves as a reviewer for many local and international journals. He was Deputy Editor of the Everyday Science for Schools Magazine of the Ghana Science Association (2015–2023). His research focuses on Mathematical Analysis, with special interests in mathematical inequalities, special functions, coding theory, and cryptography.
He has successfully supervised 11 PhD theses, 11 MPhil/MSc theses, and 75 undergraduate projects. He is known for maintaining excellent relationships with students and colleagues, consistently encouraging them to uphold hard work, commitment, dedication, and perseverance.
Professor Iddrisu has presented papers at numerous local and international conferences. He represented Ghana at the 10th Pan African Congress of Mathematicians (PACOM 2022) in Brazzaville, Congo, with support from the Government of the Republic of Congo through the African Mathematical Union.
Professional Service and Contributions�He has provided professional service to several Ghanaian institutions, including Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, University of Cape Coast, Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills Training and Entrepreneurial Development, Tamale Technical University, Bolgatanga Technical University, and Tamale College of Education. He has also conducted capacity-building training for Senior High School teachers and serves as a panel member for the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission on the accreditation of mathematics programmes in tertiary institutions.
He is the founder and Proprietor of Idrees Smart Academy, a basic school in Tamale.
Awards and Memberships�Professor Iddrisu has received many awards and citations for distinguished leadership and dedicated service. He is a member of several professional bodies, including:
