The Voiceless can confirm that Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, former Information Minister, former Zongo Development Minister and former Chief Executive of the NPA shall contest for the position of Vice Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) when nominations open for that purpose. The Voiceless fully endorses his bid, and here is why.
I have known Mustapha Abdul-Hamid for nearly 30 years now. When the New Patriotic Party (NPP) was out doored in 1992, he was one of the very young university students to answer the call of duty.
Throughout the Northern Region and beyond, he defied the intimidatory tactics of the PNDC’s para-military organizations to launch an onslaught on the NDC.
Mustapha was a permanent feature at all NPP rallies throughout the Northern Region. Indeed, many young people went to NPP rallies with the sole aim of listening to the eloquent and intelligent Jato. In fact, we nicknamed him “NPP Rawlings” because of his complexion.
We can not make a list of people who have paid their dues to the NPP and exclude Mustapha.
They were the foundation members of the party’s branch at the University of Cape Coast in 1992.
By dint of hard work, Mustapha cemented his name in the register of the party’s hard-working foot soldiers. It is in recognition of this hard work that he was elected as the National Youth Organizer of the party at Sekondi in 2002, thus becoming the first elected National Youth Organizer of the party.
Prior to his election as National Youth Organizer, he contested and lost the position of National Organizer in 2001 in Legon. Subsequently, in 2005, he also contested and lost the position of General Secretary of the party. So, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid has known victories and defeats.
When you go to war, you need battle-tested Generals who have scars to show for their participation in battle.
Mustapha has the scars to show. For the better part of 10 years, he was the spokesperson for Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. And he was a good communicator. Mustapha is intellectually deep, charismatic, and eloquent - attributes that are a game changer when it comes to politics.
Another reason that The Voiceless is considered compelling in supporting Mustapha Abdul-Hamid is loyalty. In politics, loyalty is indispensable. The kind of loyalty and commitment that Mustapha has shown towards Akufo-Addo can only be admired by the most casual of on-lookers. Having known him for over 30 years and interacted with him on several fronts, The Voiceless can vouch for his passion, commitment, and deep love for the party.
Mustapha is deeply rooted in the ideology of the party. It is this passion and love for the party that has made him a key operative in the party’s national campaigns since 2004.
The Voiceless understands that communication is also contextual. The character and nature of communication when the party is in opposition is different from when the party is in power. In opposition, we need a more feisty type of communication that is laced with passion. This is the unique character that Mustapha Abdul-Hamid has.
The Voiceless has not openly endorsed any of the candidates for the National Chairmanship position. But whoever emerges as National Chairman, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid will serve as a perfect complement for that person. Mustapha Abdul-Hamid was born and raised in Tamale. Indeed, for a very long time, many people thought that he was a Dagomba. He speaks impeccable Dagbani. He attended the Station Experimental Primary School in Tamale and also had his Sixth Form education in Tamale Secondary School. To this day, his home is in Tamale. However, his father is a Bisa from Widana in the Upper East Region. That gives him leverage in the Upper East, where the NPP has been known not to do well. The Voiceless’ checks show that Mustapha Abdul-Hamid impacted positively on the people of the Pusiga Constituency. So, the Upper East also gets a solid representation by virtue of Mustapha Abdul-Hamid’s inclusion at the seat of decision-making.
Maternally, Mustapha comes from the royal family of Gambaga. He is the grandchild of Gambarana Musah Bawumia and the son of Adama Musah. Mustapha speaks impeccable Mampruli as well. Indeed, Mustapha is a polyglot. In the 10 years that he spoke for Akufo-Addo, many people asked if he was born or bred in Kumasi or the Ashanti Region. The fact that Twi is the most widely spoken language in Ghana makes Mustapha an asset indeed for the party in its quest to wrestle power from the NDC.
I have heard people worry about the loyalty of certain personalities who are contesting for National Chairmanship. People worry that they may not be as committed to a Bawumia victory as they should be. Even though I have my doubts about whether any party officer will wish the downfall of the party, Mustapha Abdul-Hamid, a strong Bawumia loyalist, will check-mate any machinations that any one has against Bawumia. In fact, my checks show that Mustapha is a distant cousin to Bawumia on his mother’s side. The Voiceless is therefore convinced beyond a shadow of a doubt that Mustapha will serve to protect the interest of the presidential candidate with absolute love and passion.
There has been a traditional argument about whether leaders are made or born. While The Voiceless does not have a position on this traditional argument, The Voiceless can state without fear of contradiction, that Mustapha is born to lead. He has been in leadership for as long as I have known him. In Tamale Secondary School, he was SRC Secretary. At the University of Cape Coast, he was Local NUGS Secretary, SRC President, GMSA President, Secretary of Northern Students Union, and Editor-in Chief of the Casely-Hayford Hall magazine, TELSTAR. Mustapha has been forged in the fire of leadership.
The Voiceless is convinced beyond a shadow of doubt, that Mustapha’s addition to the list of Vice Chairmen of the party will enormously boost the image of the party and give it the needed verve and energy that is required of an opposition party to wrestle power.
The Voiceless, therefore, endorses the candidature of Mustapha Abdul-Hamid as National Vice Chairman of the NPP.
