The efforts of Ghana's National Food Buffer Stock Company (NAFCO) are being recognized and celebrated locally and internationally, notwithstanding the challenges. In September 2022 in the USA, Buffer Stock was given a Special Commendation honor during the  International Forum on African-Caribbean Leadership in New York, USA by the Prime Minister of St. Lucia, H.E Phillip J. Pierre.

Just a few weeks ago in Mauritius, I led a delegation to an event where Buffer Stock's works were again celebrated on the sidelines of the 11th ALM Persons of the Year Investiture during which both the company and its Chief Executive Officer, Hanan Abdul-Wahab were recognized. The award was presented by the President of Sierra Leone, H.E Julius Maada Bio.

Hon. Dr. Bryan Acheampong (the incoming Minister for Food and Agriculture) during his vetting exhibited his intended commitment and passion will help place the state food security entity (NAFCO) on a new pedestal, propelled with adequate resources to enable it to carry out its mandates fully when he assumes office.

Over the last 6 years, the National Food Buffer Stock Company ( NAFCO), has contributed immensely towards the socioeconomic gains of the government. It is credited with ensuring the seamless feeding of approximately 6 million children ( since 2017) who have passed through the Free Senior High School ( Free SHS) Programme.

In the words of the former Education Minister, Hon. Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh" .....without Buffer Stock, the Free SHS story would have been different". At the same time, NAFCO has been the biggest purchaser of food commodities grown and processed locally, thereby helping to reduce post-harvest losses.

When Covid-19 hit the nation in 2020, Buffer Stock played a central role in the government's relief and social mitigation interventions by aiding the supply of both cooked and uncooked food to the vulnerable Nationwide.

Kudos to the Governing Board and the management of NAFCO led by Alhaji Hanan Abdul-Wahab for exemplary leadership.
